Mental Health Awareness

Mental health problems can cause distress to individuals and those who care for them. The Prime Minister has said that mental health is one of the “greatest social challenges of our time”. Overall, it is estimated that one in ten children and young people have a diagnosable mental disorder – the equivalent of three pupils in every classroom across the country. Therefore, schools and colleges are a vital part of a wider systems approach to promoting positive mental wellbeing and preventing mental illness in children and young people.

'The national focus on children and young people’s mental health in recent years has been long overdue and welcome. The new funds government have invested in this area have generated a wealth of activity and momentum to transform our children and young people’s mental health services – with some success'.

At Woodstock CE Primary School we take our responsibility to support children and their families very seriously. We are working with the National Children's Bureau to achieve a school's Well-being Award.  This means as a school we are committed to:

  • Embedding a culture which values the happiness and emotional welfare of all its pupils
  • Ensuring that the promotion of good mental health and emotional wellbeing is the responsibility of all the whole school community including: staff, governors, parents and pupils, and partner organisations beyond the school gates
  • Showing the school’s commitment to promoting wellbeing as part of day-to-day school life
  • Developing a whole school strategy for improving the wellbeing of pupils
  • Attracting and retain high-quality staff
